Earlier this month, unit 5 successfully passed a 15-day trial operation and was officially put into business operation. It is the world’s first reversible pumped storage unit with a rated speed of 600 r/min and a capacity of 350 MW. “The knowledge showed that the unit meets our excellence criteria and thereby proves that the engineering, manufacturing, set up and commissioning of the world’s first 600 r/min with 350 MW unit was profitable,” stated Zhang Chengping, mechanical and electrical chief engineer at plant operator the China Three Gorges Group (CTG).
